Forgotten Friend (Sketch)

Staying up late to get this idea out. Inspired after watching a kick-ass Pacific Rim trailer form WonderCon. Can't wait for it!

Every year Newgrounds.com celebrates Pico Day. I've seen many artworks, music tracks, and animations made the previous years, but this year I decided to participate.
I'll upload the final when I am finished, but this is my process so far.

Master Copies (Set 1)

Look at art...Feel bad.

I've made a commitment to get better throughout these next few months. Whether it be though studying the fundamentals to actual drawing and painting. Overall, I understand the importance of "making it" or "surviving" in the industry. I started this blog not just as a way to share the Art of Mike Yakovlev, but as a reason to push me to do more art. To create something to the point that I want to upload it -to finish it.

When I tell myself I'm going to do something, or when I plan out my day:
-Wake up
-Start sketching

I never actually do it. What really happens is:
-Wake uo
-Look at art
-Feel bad

So I've been recently forcing myself to paint or draw when i catch myself not doing anything art-wise. This way it's unplanned and gets me into the habit of creating more art. I have two mentor-ships with two incredible artists going on at once and I don't want to take that for granted. I want to look back at the end of these next few months and see my progression, becasue it's only going to get harder from here on out.

Thanks for reading,

The Summon (UPDATE)

I put together all the steps I went through to get to the final. Was interesting to organize and look back on how it evolved.

Let's get weird.

Random sketch I did this evening. Playing around with techniques and textures. I wasn't really going for a concept or after and idea, more like seeing where i could take it just but mindlessly sketching.
Did not expect this though, haha.
I kept trying to force it to look like something, someone at least. But it went through many phases and misunderstandings. It got pretty weird at one point, but I wanted to keep moving and trying new things to make me see something. Maybe I'll turn this into a portrait later down the road.

Swift Attack

I had concepts of these characters in progress for a while. It was a long journey for creating a back story, relationships, and details of their environments. I had this composition as a few sketches, until Mike Hawthorne finally helped me get it right. I'm happy with how it turned out. It captures the emotion and the atmosphere I was aiming for.

Fantasy Enviro Sketch

I always spend too much time studying artists that I look up to. Reading what they wrote/said. Understanding their technique. If i get lucky, I talk to them, ask questions.
I made this painting under the influence & inspirations by Noah Bradley and Jaime Jones. More to come for sure.

Late Night Lounge

Stayed up last night for about 6 hours working on this one. I wanted it to be a follow up for another painting I did in a similar fashion. The previous one (can be found on my 2nd post) was taking place in the day time and at a different location. This location is nearby, but in the night time.

Thanks guys,

Around this time, I was still learning digital painting techniques and was watching a lot of Feng Zhu's Design Cinema videos. It was one thing to simply watch him explain his techniques, but another to actually try them out. Also, I had just watched Blade Runner for the first time. Pretty awesome for it's time.

Once I started painting digitally, I began painting environments. I do like to paint characters from time to time, but I find environments to be a bit more freeing. Here are some older sketches and comps.

A little bit about me

Alright... so it's happening. Doing this blog thing...
Thought I'd start off by briefly introducing myself. My name is Mike Yakovlev (born in Russia) and I love making art. That's it! haha
Right now I'm studying Illustration at PCA&D but, eager to pick up work as a conceptual artists for video games and movies. Or an illustrator for book covers and magazine editorials. Although I've spent majority of my teens painting traditionally, I've been digitally painting for a little under a year. I'm always on the hunt for new artists and work to inspire me and influence me.

I've posted before on sites like, Concept Art, Deviant Art, and sometimes Facebook or Reddit. But this is the first time posting on a blog and I'd like to consider it to be the place where I put most of my art.

Alright, enough of the boring stuff, lets see some art!
